Was walking in town the other day, and saw a 1978-80 Pontiac Sunbird Safari, a brown three-door wagon... FOR SALE! 3-speed auto unfortunately. The body was in pretty good shape, but with significant rust around the C-pillar, if not elsewhere. Interior looked pretty good. I did not get a picture before dark.

There’s a Vega under all those badges, and that’s not a good thing.

Not so sure ... Pinto wagons also had fake wood.

There is, however, one Vega that is the exception to the rule

Still a turd, but a cool turd.

Guy at my high school had one - would not let me drive it. Probably good news for his clutch, as I didn’t learn to drive stick until I was 19.

Never drove a Pinto, but I did drive a Mustang II. Horrific ....

My dad had a Vega back in the early 80s while he was in college. He at least claims that he legitimately had to add oil more often than he had to add gas. And the thing was only like 7 years old at that point. Another Massachusetts winter or two and it was rusted to the point he didn’t feel safe driving it, bought an (older!) Volvo 142 and never looked back.

I wish he held on to that Volvo.

I had both a 142S and a 142E. Then GF’s dad had a Vega that ran most of the time. He had a bumper sticker on it - “As a matter of fact, I AM a rocket scientist.” And he was.

Okay, this is a very long shot but what was this GF’s name? I’m pretty sure my Grandpa had the Vega for a little bit after my dad did(the way I remember the story my grandparents didn’t feel safe with my dad driving the thing back and forth from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts and overpaid for the car to take it away from him so he’d buy something safer, and the Vega stuck around for a bit because no one wanted to buy it). Also, my Grandpa was a rocket scientist(sort of, he was a physicist who did a lot of work with satellites).

I always thought these were good looking little cars. It’s a shame they were garbage, but a drivetrain swap fixes that.

I can’t say I like the hooded headlights, but the overall proportions are nice.

She might still do it for me ... but it’s a long way down the road.
